LOX Airport Proposals

LOX Airport Proposal Map

The Airport Commission has now reviewed the proposals and published their interim report.

There were two opposing proposals for an airport in this area:

1: Pleiade: LOX

The LOX detailed proposals which proposes a four runway airport on the Thames reservoir site with associated infrastructure improvements, including a new Thames crossing, a motorway link beween the M4 and M40 via an upgraded A34, an 8 platform passenger station adjoining the passenger terminals as well as a new station at Grove and a possible westward extension to the HS2 rail project.

Comment from the Commission:
"Although less housing would be demolished and this was cheaper with a better relative noise performance to some others in the group, this option is at a greater distance from London. This proposal would also cause the loss of over 300 hectares of high value agricultural land and would sit on a major floodplain needing significant compensatory storage provision. This area has also been earmarked as a site for a future reservoir by Thames Water.
"

PAG Airport Proposal Map

2: PAG (Progressive Aviation Group)

PAG gives two options; the second of which is a new four runway London Gateway Airport to be built on a green field site in South Oxfordshire on the Steventon/West & East Hanney villages and their surrounds. Few details are provided, except that it suggests that it would be commuting distance from Heathrow for all staff who would no longer have jobs when Heathrow closes.

Comment from the Commission:
"The Steventon option in this proposal duplicates the London Oxford by Pleiade which is more detailed and therefore the Pleiade option should assessed for this location. The RAF Croughton option contained in this proposal is a significant distance from London (c. 54 miles) with limited access to rail links. Dependent on additional HS2 station, which does not form part of proposed scheme. The area is also essentially covered by Pleiade and Bedford gap option with no apparent significant additional benefits over them.

These and all other long term options have been published on the commissionís website.
